The Beauty and Pride of Tooro Kingdom
Nestled in the green hills of western Uganda, the Tooro Kingdom stands as one of the most graceful symbols of culture, unity, and tradition in our country. Known for its hospitality, natural beauty, and deep cultural heritage, Tooro continues to inspire pride among its people — the Abatooro — and admiration from visitors near and far.

A Kingdom with a Story
The Tooro Kingdom was founded in the early 19th century after Prince Kaboyo Olimi I broke away from the larger Bunyoro-Kitara Kingdom to form his own kingdom. What began as a small state grew into one of Uganda’s most respected cultural institutions — deeply rooted in dignity, peace, and respect for heritage.
The Heart of Tooro — Fort Portal
At the heart of the kingdom lies Fort Portal, a city so serene that it was declared Uganda’s “Tourism City.” The Royal Palace, resting gracefully on Karuzika Hill, overlooks the rolling landscapes that define Tooro’s beauty. From here, visitors get a glimpse into the kingdom’s past and present — where ancient traditions blend perfectly with modern life.
Omukama and the People
The King of Tooro, known as the Omukama, is more than a cultural leader — he’s a symbol of unity, identity, and hope. His leadership embodies the kingdom’s values of respect (orukundo), peace (obusinge), and hard work (obutumwa).
The Tooro people are known for their gentle nature, humility, and warmth. Their language, Rutooro, is melodic and full of expressions that reflect love and community.
Culture, Dance, and Tradition
Tooro’s cultural expressions — from the rhythmic entooro dances to traditional storytelling and folk songs — are a true reflection of its soul. These performances are not just entertainment; they carry lessons, history, and wisdom passed down through generations.
The Empaako naming tradition, unique to Tooro (and a few neighboring regions), is one of the kingdom’s most cherished practices. Each person receives a special Empaako name like Akiiki, Amooti, or Atwooki — names that express love, honor, and belonging.
Land of Natural Wonders
Tooro is blessed with breathtaking scenery — crater lakes, lush tea estates, rolling hills, and views of the majestic Rwenzori Mountains. From the peaceful Lake Nyinambuga to the Kibale Forest, home of the chimpanzees, nature speaks loudly here. It’s no wonder Tooro is often called “The Kingdom of Nature’s Smile.”
Abaana B’omuka Reflection
For us at Abaana B’omuka, Tooro represents more than a place — it’s a feeling of home. A reminder of who we are, what we value, and the beauty that lives within our traditions. The pride of Tooro inspires us to keep telling our stories, to celebrate our roots, and to pass them on with love.
In Tooro, culture lives not in museums, but in the hearts of its people.
And that’s what makes it timeless.
